As the Technical Advisor to Microsoft's CTO, Kevin Scott, Karmel oversaw Microsoft's technical partnership with OpenAI from its early, awkward phase through the launch of GPT-3.5, GPT-4, Copilot, ChatGPT, Azure OpenAI Platform and more.
Additionally, Karmel worked across both companies, Microsoft Research, and startups to identify new trends in AI and help Microsoft position itself and its products for the AI age.
AI teaches us something fundamental about consciousness, and it points to a science of consciousness that could change how we experience being human. Just as an AI can think by computing over digital state, human thought and consciousness can be understood as computation over state stored in matter.
Bringing together philosophy and computer science, Karmel writes and speaks on the ways in which AI will change the way we understand ourselves.
Karmel led engineering teams working on TensorFlow, the world's leading AI development library at the time. In this role, she oversaw the development of core math libraries and high-level APIs, including Keras. Her work placed her inside the beating heart of AI innovation, collaborating with researchers and engineers who were using TensorFlow to develop revolutionary technologies such as Transformers and reinforcement learning models.
